THE POETS DOWN HERE
Good News! 01/14/2010

For those of you who think it’s okay to continue your completely desensitized, uninformed, apathetic, self-centered American lifestyle, I’ve got great news.

You CAN ignore the tragedy in Haiti! You’ll have to turn off your TV for a few days, and mindlessly agree with those people who insist on mentioning how terrible it is. But fear not, it will pass from our headlines soon enough. And then you won’t have to think about it anymore. Ignorance is easy. In fact, it’s practically applauded in our society!

...........

Hmm. Here’s a better idea. Kick the apathetic attitude:

First, imagine what it might be like to see your home reduced to rubble. To not be able to find your sentimental posessions, or perhaps your pet. Imagine what it would be like to not be able to get in touch with your friends and family members... to not know if they are okay, or even alive. Imagine having to drag the dead body of a family member to a nearby hospital so that it doesn’t lie in the street for days.

And then, get off your ass and do something. Donate. If your giving doesn’t cause you to have to give up something you want, you’re not giving enough. Volunteer. Give your time, money, talent, prayers, thoughts - whatever you’ve got. Stay informed. Even when it’s not in the headlines anymore, keep updated with how the relief efforts are going. What would you expect the rest of the world to do and think if this happened in YOUR neighborhood?  ... or is that just different?

“I’m not gonna settle for apathy
I’m not gonna wait around for calamity
I’m not gonna be a part of the insanity
I said I’m gonna stand up, stand up for humanity.”

Mediocrity. 01/11/2010

An empty bucket with a nice paint job is still an empty bucket.

Empty, emotionless music that has great musicianship, excellent recording quality, and impressive vocals is still empty, emotionless music.

I honestly think I'd rather listen to a semi-shitty band that's passionate about their message than a polished band that has nothing to say except, "We are so cool!"

Mediocrity runs rampant in this world and I don't plan on supporting it.

So there.

Updates 12/01/2009

If anyone wants to know what's going on in my life...
  • I'm now officially getting excited to play at Uptown Theater on December 18th.
  • The band is going to do something exciting in Dallas, TX in January. I would tell you what it is, but I'm not sure if we're announcing it yet. Let's just say it's going to be amazing.
  • I'm getting an African Grey this Spring.
  • Currently listening to: Jesse Malin, Glitter in the Gutter.
  • Currently reading: Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol.
  • Advice for everyone: if you've been meaning to do something (like declutter your house), but you don't have time and have been putting it off... seriously, just do it. Create a big goal and then take an entire week if need be, and DO IT. It will change your life for the better!

Avoiding Passion 10/13/2009

Life has a tendency to get cluttered.  Even the things you care about get cluttered - your dreams, your relationships, your work.  You don't mean for it to happen, but it happens nonetheless.

I frequently daydream about a simple version of life, where I am a street musician.  I'm on the corner, my guitar case is open, and so is my soul.  I play, dance, and sing… everyday.  Coins shine against the soft black material in my case, and the sight makes me smile because I know I'll be able to go eat, and then keep playing.

Hundreds of strangers pass me every hour.
Perhaps they hear me sing a single phrase.
Maybe they smile.
Maybe they blink back a tear.
Maybe they remember that phrase forever.

Where is this simplicity in my real life?  Does the street musician version of myself love music any more than I do?  Of course not - but she has the time to realize it.  She has time - EVERYDAY - to close her eyes and jump into her own passion.  Her passion takes every ounce of emotion she's got, but she doesn't have anything else to worry about.  She made sure of that.

MY passion is emotionally draining… so I avoid it.
MY passion is passion.

What makes you avoid your passion?
What would your "alternate self" do to alleviate this problem?

Today, I watched my friends break into a locked safe (not stolen) using basically just a screw and a hammer. Impressive, and also scary.

And then I stayed up until 4:30 writing a new song... an anthem of sorts that has been in the making for entirely too long. It's a breakthrough song for me and writing it was physically draining. I hope everyone else likes it as much as I do.

I feel that, after I get some sleep, I will want to think about it and play it again. But right now, all I really want is to go crawl into bed.

I'll go do that now.
XO,
Emma

Road signs 09/22/2009

First question:
Do you believe that there are "signs" in your life that point the right direction?

Second question:
Do you actively look for them?
